The marls...mention these two words to the experienced flats fisherman and be prepared to see his eyes light up as he begins a discourse that usually begins with "A maze of seemingly endless turtle grass sand flats..." and often ends with "virtually unexplored and unfished." If you are new to Great Abaco Island, the marls occupy 400 square miles of the central mid-section of the island's unihabited west coast. It is an area of twisted mangroves, countless unnamed islands and endless acres of unspoiled flats filled with unintiated and very cooperative bonefish...certainly, to our minds, an area that no serious flats fisherman should ignore.
But what is perhaps most amazing about the marls is not their immensity, but that despite considerable attention from the angling community, much of the marls remains unexplored and unfished. The marls have been nibbled at from the north, and gently prodded from the south and the middle. But the great interior has remained virtually untouched. This is due primarily to the remote and very shallow topography of the area. Because much of the marl's 400 square miles are less than one foot deep, modern, shallow-draft, flats boats are essential to access this interior. Conventional skiffs simply draw too much water and risk becoming high and dry in this extensive maze.
Enter Banyan Beach Bonefishing and head guide Joe Pritchard. Armed with modern flats boats that can be poled in five inches of water, run in about ten inches and can get up on a plane in a little over a foot of water, Joe and his cadre of experienced guides can now explore the most remote reaches of this legendary area... the Marls of Abaco. Each boat has a casting platform with a hassle-free flush deck and a poling platform. They run new outboard motors with tilt and trim plates. All this combined with strong push poles and it is safe to say that the Banyan Beach Bonefishing guides have all the necessary equipment to explore this area in comfort and safety.
The guides we employ at Treasure Cay are very experienced and professional. They know their waters exceptionally well and understand fly fishermen. They are great at finding fish and their ability to spot fish is amazing.
Banyan Beach Bonefishing Club is located on the outskirts of lovely Treasure Cay. Treasure Cay is a civilized place far from civilization. Located in the heart of Abaco, it is far away from the hustle and bustle of commercial resort areas yet easy to reach by plane or boat. Treasure Cay is an out-island paradise. The club is situated on what National Geographic Magazine calls "one of the world's ten best beaches." This beach boasts three miles of powder-soft, white sand framed by turquoise and azure blue waters. The club completed a $240,000 renovation in 1999 and now offers excellent poolside accommodations for up to 8 fishermen. These beautifully appointed, luxury condominiums sleep two to four guests each. Delicious meals are served in your condo or if you want to sample local restaurants, vouchers are available. Within a short walk is a liquor store, dental clinic, physician's office, post office, bank, beauty parlor and, of course, the spectacular beach.
For the non-fisherman, there is always plenty to do. Treasure Cay offers sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, beach combing, golf and tennis. Or take the ferry to the old loyalist village of Green Turtle Cay for lunch and shopping.
Banyan Beach Club has everything a true island paradise should offer: a beautiful beach, excellent accommodations, pristine flats, new boats, and wonderfully friendly and outgoing people. Banyan Beach has become one of the top bonefish lodges in the Bahamas and is a perfect spot for families and non-fishing companions too.
