If you followed a course a little less than 150 miles due east from Palm Beach, Florida, you would eventually find yourself in the middle of a shallow convoluted maze of mangrove flats. The biggest of these mangrove bushes could be called cays and the smallest would all but disappear at high tide. The locals call this area the marls and, were it not for a single fish species, this area would be labeled a vast wasteland - an area of no use to anyone. But these marls are the home of an elusive angling prize, the bonefish. This fish has single-handedly raised the marl's reputation from wasteland to world class angling paradise.
While Gorsuch Outfitters accesses the northern marls from Treasure Cay and the southern marls from Sandy Point, these middle marls are accessed from Nettie Symonette's resort.
The lodge is situated on the east side of Abaco at Casuarina Point near Cherokee Sound. The marls are reached by vehicle via an old logging road. At the end of this road, Nettie has dredged a channel to open water.
This channel, known locally as "Nettie's Ditch", allows fishermen to have nearly exclusive access to this huge and seemingly endless flats system that comprises the uninhabited west coast of Great Abaco Island's midsection.
The lodge uses primarily guides from the white loyalist village of Cherokee Sound. These excellent guides use 16' Rahming skiffs equipped with 45 hp Yamaha outboards. To fish the marls, it's about a 20-25 minute drive over a bumpy road and then a 15-30 minute boat ride to the flats; and its worth every minute of it. The access to Cherokee Sound and its hard bottomed flats is immediate...only a short few minutes from the lodge.
Bonefish guests are housed poolside at the new Sea Shells Beach Club located on a gorgeous 7 mile long white sand beach. Rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and complete with small sitting rooms and private balconies.
The new Sea Shells Beach Club offers accommodations and amenities that appeal to non-anglers, as well as fishermen. Guests at the Sea Shells Club enjoy a lap pool, jacuzzi, laundry facility, ice machine, satellite TV and a library. Guests also have access to a landlocked lagoon which holds baby tarpon and barracuda. Canoes are available for self-guided fishing excursions. Rooms are equipped with microwaves, refridgerators, hair dryers, coffee makers and the use of bicycles.
The meals at Nettie's are excellent and one of the strong points of this operation. Lots of seafood prepared Bahamian-style supplemented with chicken, steaks and pork chops will whet anyone's appetite.
By booking Nettie's Different of Abaco, Angling Destination's clients can now experience the "Grand Tour" of Abaco. You can now fish Treasure Cay, Different of Abaco and Sandy Point all on the same trip and cover the marls top to bottom! This is the ultimate bonefishing safari for the dedicated saltwater enthusiast. We recommend at least 8-12 fishing days to leisurely and properly experience this unique angling adventure.
